Waring’s Creek drains its watershed into West Lake, a small body of water formed when the Sandbanks, one of the outstanding freshwater shoreline features of eastern North America, surrounded and captured several acres of Lake Ontario.

The Athol Recreation Centre was originally

built as a hall in 1873.   The Athol Town Hall was a

place where the community held many functions.

In the 1980’s. the municipal offices were added at

the rear of the building. Following amalgamation

the building has been used as a community hall.

Today the Athol Town Hall remains the focus of the community

especially in Cherry Valley. There are many groups and

organizations that utilize this hall including the

Cherry Valley Women’s Institute.

The Athol Ward

Recreation Committee runs a variety of special events

including a Strawberry Social, Games Nights, ,Yoga classes, various workshops and so much more!

Led by project initiator and Cherry Valley resident Neil Kerr and members of the Athol Recreation Committee a duck nest was installed on the edge of the big pond in Cherry Valley. The nest was one of five installed in the marsh areas at both east and west ends of East Lake. The nests are more like tunnels made out of hardware cloth and straw and suspended above the water surface on a steel cradle system. The initiative, funded by the Athol Recreation Committee is meant to prevent predation and to encourage the survival rate of the duck eggs.
Special thanks to John McKinnon, Anne Kerr, Billy Munnelly and Dave Baberstock and others who helped to make the nests at a previous workshop.
Special thank you to Lesley Hadrill and Kevin O’ Connor for allowing us to install the 5th nest on the pond on their property (pictured above).

Dear Athol Committee  and Community Members:

The election of the Executive positions will be taking place on Monday May 11th  at 7 pm the Athol Town Hall.
A representative from the County will be present to conduct the elections and answer any questions or concerns about the voting process, the new process of Council appointments to Committees and the Terms of Reference,  which will detail how Recreation Committees will run going forward.

Those of you who submitted the application forms for appointment should have been notified by Council.
Of these 9 appointments we will require a Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary.
Please note you can only vote if you have been appointed by Council and are in attendance.   However all are welcome to attend the meeting.

If you have been appointed by Council and would like to run for one of the executive positions, but cannot attend the meeting, you may submit your request to run in writing to me. (susanwallis@kos.net)  I will then pass it onto the County Representative who will be conducting the elections.

The Athol Recreation Committee has had a wonderful past year, with   great plans in the works for the 2015-2016  season,  which will be instituted by our new committee.

Keep posted to our blog for details.

All the best,
Susan Wallis
Interim Chair

Athol Recreation Committee
