Many might have been watching the closing ceremonies of the Olympics yesterday basking in the glory of our Men’s Hockey Olympic Gold, others however were in the pursuit of another gold at our local Athol Recreation Centre in Cherry Valley.  The Golden Hoot award that is.

The excitement built slowly on Sunday during the Athol Recreation Centre’s 2nd annual Scrabble Tournament.  The small, yet enthusiastic group began the first round of play putting the nimble minded Peta  Shelton and Mary  Brett into the lead.  After a wonderful potluck lunch, things quickly changed with Scott Bailey of County Road 10 taking the tournament with a whopping 2nd game score of 261 points giving him a total winning score of 385.  As you can see from the jubilant photo below Scott was as ecstatic as any  Olympic Gold Medal winner.    He did however take a moment from his rejoicing to snap a photo with our silver placed winner Peta Shelton of Picton and bronze winner Mary  Brett of West Lake.

Tonight is the first of 5 classes by local yoga teacher Carrie Taylor.

Classes are from 5:30-6:45 (1 hour, 15 mins.)

at the Athol Town Hall in Cherry Valley

$5 per class.

Tonight’s  class is FREE!  Come out and meet Carrie!

Matts and props are supplied or bring your own!

This is a recommended class if you are new to yoga or revisiting and want to develop a longer-term effective yoga practice. Classic postures and breath work are explored in detail, allowing you to develop an understanding of key techniques and build confidence. It is the perfect grounding in the basics of yoga.

A note from Carrie:

Yoga is an exploration of self and I encourage my students to turn their attention inward to understand what is real for them in each moment.
I started practicing yoga in 1995 with the news of my first pregnancy. Looking for something that would stretch & strengthen my newly forming body, relax my mind and ease the anxiety of childbirth; yoga was the perfect fit.
Many years later, as a hatha yoga instructor, my vision is to create an open and safe environment in which new and experienced students can comfortably practice.
Students will learn to establish a rhythm using breath and movement while becoming aware of their bodies and creating stillness within their minds. Connecting with their inner messenger and learning how to nurture themselves.
