An impressive number (25) attended our annual general meeting last Friday night, and several dozen more joined us for a wonderful potluck dinner, followed by our usual rip-roaring ‘games night’. Another great night in the Valley!
A highlight of the meeting was a slide show of last year’s many events. The executive was re-elected for another term: Kato Wake, chair, Susan Wallis, vice chair, Janet Davies, secretary and Lily Lee, treasurer. Thanks to all who came out, and special thanks to our fantastic committee. Here’s to another wonderful year!
Kato was surprised and delighted when John McKinnon and Glen Wallis awarded her The Phil Dodds Memorial award in recognition of Volunteer service to the community of Athol Township. A great honour, and well deserved.
A richly deserved Award.
I wish I had been there but the throes of moving closer to Cherry Valley occupy all our time.
Big question: how do we connect to the locals? Leavitts, Kings et al? IAs one who worked with the previous Rec Assn I think highly important to have the Athol Rec not characterized as a bunch of move-ins.

Hey Brian welcome home. Gotta point out we’re all locals. The present committee started as a group of friends (as these groups do) and is steadily rippling out into the wider community. Old Athol families? Harvey Terpstra played in the Scrabble Tournament. Glendon Green’s son Brian is a regular at Games Night with his wife Debbie, Linda Cole is very involved in the committee. Mary Lou Cameron (Cherry Valley WI president) joined us for the AGM (along with about 16 other guests) and praised how Athol Rec has cheered up the old hall. 100 people enjoyed the pub night. We just keep putting out that welcome mat and new (and old) people keep coming. And I think that’s great!
So do I! Well done! Now that our move is almost accomplished I look forward to enjoying the fine activities you are generating!
Brian
